The Quantum and Photonic Technologies (QPT) master track is a two-year program offered within the Master’s in Fundamental Physics and Applications at the University of Lille. Open to students entering either the first or second year, the program is designed for those with a background in fundamental physics. Taught entirely in English, it offers training in a vibrant international environment, preparing students for careers and research in the rapidly evolving fields of quantum science and photonics.

The Quantum and Photonic Technologies master track aims to train physicists to tackle the major scientific questions of the 21st century, from concrete to applied challenges. A wide range of physics is part of the master track, going from fundamental quantum physics and quantum technologies, the physics of light and photonic technologies, to condensed matter physics and statistical mechanics.

Savoir-faire et compétences

Students of the Quantum and Photonics Technologies (QPT) program will develop a broad expertise in modern theoretical and experimental physics, covering quantum mechanics, condensed matter physics, statistical physics, quantum field theory, quantum information, and photonics. They will learn how to model and manipulate quantum systems, harness light for information processing and sensing, and use modern computational methods—including AI-assisted scientific tools—to address contemporary challenges in physics. Through laboratory courses, interdisciplinary projects, and long-term research internships, students will acquire the scientific, technical, and professional skills required for doctoral studies and careers in research and innovation in the rapidly growing field of quantum and photonics technologies

Les + de la formation

The QPT Master's program is part of the Complexity in the Physical and Digital Worlds Graduate Programme, which brings together expertise in physics, mathematics, and computer science to address the scientific challenges of tomorrow.
It is also supported by the C2EMPI Centre of Excellence, which fosters fundamental and interdisciplinary research at the interface of physics, mathematics, and their applications. Scholarships for students with outstanding academic records are available through both the Graduate Programme and C2EMPI, together with relocation grants for international students to help them settle in Lille.
The training builds on the scientific excellence and research expertise of the two leading laboratories on campus: PhLAM (Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers, Atomes et Molécules) and IEMN (Institut d'Électronique, de Microélectronique et de Nanotechnologie), where students can carry out research projects and internships in areas ranging from fundamental quantum physics and photonics to emerging quantum technologies.

Organisation

The master is a 2 years course (120 ECTS credits). Three semesters (30 credits each) of integrated courses delivered in english and a final semester dedicated to a research internship.

The master's programme is organised into different knowledge and skills blocks (BCC):

  • BCC1 - Implementing fundamental physics tools and approaches to produce highly specialised knowledge
  • BCC2 - Solving complex problems in photonics and quantum physics
  • BCC3 - Producing and communicating on experimental, numerical or modeling project
  • BCC4 -Managing professional projects in quantum physics and/or photonics

Insertion professionnelle

The Master of Fundamental and Applied Physics leads to work in either public research laboratories or in industry or business, in one of the numerous fields covered in the master. It is possible to enter the workforce directly after graduation or following further study and a PhD. This Master’s degree is also appropriate for prospective teachers.
